Your Secret Weapon to Success
...Time and Focus
Do you ever have days when your mind feels full of “stuff”, churning over all the things you need to do, should do or have put off; things you have started but not finished; things you haven’t even started, jobs, errands, social engagements, family commitments, business items, household tasks or repairs??? How does this affect you? Do you feel overwhelmed, anxious, stressed or exhausted, can’t sleep, tired or out of control? Have you ever woken up at 3am remembering something that you should have done but didn’t? Or did you wake up with a great idea? Well, you are not alone and it seems to be a common occurrence in our busy lives.
Don’t despair! There is a secret weapon to combat this.
It’s time and focus.
First, you need to look at the way you view time from a different perspective.
You may have read all about time management systems, attended courses or seminars, already use to do lists and have inboxes and filing systems. But do they really work for you? How productive are you? Do you often have a zillion things happening at once and thoughts going round and round in your head? Well, here’s the thing. Most time management systems don’t really work, because we’re not implementing our tasks correctly within the time. You can’t really manage time, you can only manage yourself within the time you have. You can manage the way you think, feel and behave, the actions you do, the way you do it and the results you produce. Time is a constant and we all have the same number of hours in a day. Some people just seem to be able to do more with it!
The key here is to manage yourself better. Manage your thinking, what you do with your thoughts and the action steps you take. The clearer your head, the less stress, anxiety or overwhelm you will have and the more focus you will have. The more focus you have at any one time will create a bigger channel for your focus so the easier it is to do the tasks. Imagine the difference between driving down an open road or motorway at high speed as against driving down a small country road, full of twists, turns and blind corners. The destination may be the same but the journey, the experience along the way and the time it takes will be totally different.
So, how do we increase our own channel of focus, speed down the motorway rather than meander down the country lanes? We use the FREE formula to free ourselves of some of our clutter so we can put our foot on the accelerator and drive along the motorway.
Here is your secret Weapon, your formula to be FREE...
1. F = Formulate. Make a list of all the unfinished “things” in your life. All your projects at work, at home, things to repair, people to call and any incomplete tasks. Write them all down on a piece of paper.
2. R = Review each unfinished task or thing. Take one task at a time and write down the actual steps to complete it. For instance, if your washing machine isn’t working properly, and hasn’t been for a long time, it’s probably because you haven’t really thought in detail what you really need to do to sort this out, or you put it off, so it’s been “looping” in your head. Your steps could be something like this:-
First, find the manual in the house. Find section on troubleshooting. Read and see if you can fix. If not, find number of service/ manufacturer and call them to determine how to get it fixed. Act on their instructions. This could be waiting till they send someone or you finding the number of a local repairer. Next, it could be to get two quotes and book one to come and fix it. The very act of writing down the steps required to complete each unfinished task or project in itself will allow your brain more space to focus on things not about things or what needs to be done. Our brains are not good storage bins! They also tend to remind us of all our unfinished jobs at times when it isn’t possible to complete them - like 3am in the morning or in the middle of a meeting!
3. E = Evaluate which one can be done right now and take action instantly. If it took you less than 2 minutes, find another one and do something straight away. Keep this master list where you can check in daily.
4. E = Enter an agreement with yourself to keep a folder with your unfinished tasks, the steps required and agree to take at least one or two small steps every day to complete them.
This is guaranteed to free up your own personal “RAM” in your mind and increase your channel of focus. Furthermore, if you view every project you have to do in this manner it will absolutely increase your focus and productivity.
WHY? Firstly, it closes “loops.” All the unfinished or unactioned tasks or projects that we have are rather like unfulfilled contracts or commitments with ourselves. Because we know that we need to do these things they churn around in our subconscious mind, clogging us up. These loops not only detract from our personal Happiness (Our Cellular Set Point lowers, which is 50% of our happiness - to read more on this, you can purchase my E book “Keep that Change” online at www.mindsetforsuccess.com.au ) but because they are unfinished, they are like continuous loops running round and round in our head. This uses up our “RAM”, reduces our creativity and capacity for new ideas, causes us to get overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, depressed or stuck in life.
By writing each step down, closing the unfinished loops, will give you extra RAM for new ideas, more creativity, more inner peace, increased feelings of self satisfaction and perhaps most of all, a bigger channel for clearer focus. This will allow you to speed through your tasks, be more productive which may allow you to do more or have more time other interests. You can start to be your own coach!
